The Effects of Life-Stress on Pilot Performance

Whether we openly discuss them or not, we all periodically experience stressful circumstances (e.g., difficulty on the job, troubled relationships, concerns about our health or the health of loved ones) that have the potential of producing physical or psychological symptoms (e.g., worry or preoccupation, difficulty concentrating, fatigue). What impact, if any, does this life stress have on skilled performance? The Effects of Life-Stress on Pilot Performance explores this issue by reviewing the relevant literature in three areas: studies examining pilot's perception and reporting of stress, those that look at a possible correlation between life-stressors and aviation accidents, and those exploring the potential effects of life-stress on cognitive performance.
