Shawn
(CV -
PDF) joined the SJSU/Ames team in 2010 after ten years as a pilot with Delta Connection carrier, Comair. During this time he was also the director of human factors for the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) and has worked extensively with Comair and the aviation industry on numerous safety programs including the investigation of five major air carrier accidents and hundreds of incidents. His previous work prior to aviation was as a paramedic/firefighter, Pharmacist and Poison Information Specialist. Occasionally, he still practices in the field of toxicology and human performance.
His interest and focus includes the role that safety culture, human behavior and the construct of human error alter our understanding of accident causation. Additionally, he is interested in understanding socio-technical failure when viewed through the lens of complexity theory and how this might be operationalized preventively in safety sensitive domains. He has published several articles, taught aviation safety/HF at The Ohio State University and lectured extensively elsewhere. Shawn has a Masters in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle and is currently pursuing a PhD at Ohio State in Industrial Systems Engineering, human factors with Dr. David Woods. |
