Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) Supports NASA–JAXA Disaster Recovery Drill
(Oct 15, 2018)
Over October 11-12, 2018, NASA and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) participated in a disaster recovery drill held in Japan's Ehime Prefecture. The focus of the joint effort was on enabling the safe integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) into disaster recovery efforts through the connection of NASA's UAS Traffic Management (UTM) system and JAXA's Disaster Relief Aircraft Information Sharing Network (D-NET) system. NASA and JAXA researchers and engineers worked to connect the two systems located in their respective countries, which enabled data exchanges, operation planning, and visualization. During the drill, two researchers from NASA Ames Research Center (one from the AOL) were onsite in Japan at the Operations Center and UAS test site. Researchers and engineers from the AOL provided technical support, data collection, and monitoring from the UTM Laboratory.
