In September,
NASA transferred their research findings from the Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) project to the FAA. NASA and the FAA are now set to continue the rollout of the ATD-2 flight scheduling technology, deploying the surface and metering tools to an initial selection of 27 airports across the United States. As part of this effort, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson met with aviation leaders at Orlando International Airport on November 24, 2021 to discuss the implementation of these new tools.
This aviation tech will improve the reliability and timeliness of air travel for all passengers by reducing runway taxi times and hold times at the gate, while also benefitting the environment by saving fuel, and reducing harmful carbon emissions. As part of a larger program called Terminal Flight Data Manager (TFDM), set to roll out in 2023, the new technologies will help usher in a new era of improved performance and more sustainable operations.
