In September 2021, members of NASA Ames' Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) representing the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) National Campaign (NC) subproject supported a significant flight test with Joby Aviation. This event marked the first time the National Campaign ever completed a flight test with an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
Over the course of two and a half weeks, the Joby Aviation eVTOL aircraft flew a series of scenarios. The goal of this flight test was to collect vehicle performance and acoustic data for use in modeling and simulation of future airspace concepts. A primary focus of the AOL was to receive inbound ADS-B data from the eVTOL and to push the data to the Airspace Operations Management (AOM) visualization system and database.
This flight test was a major milestone for AAM in the U.S and served as a baseline for future aircraft readiness tests with more industry partners.
