The Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) hosts NASA Associate Administrator Bob Cabana
(Sep 27, 2022)
On Sept. 21, 2022, NASA Associate Administrator Bob Cabana visited the Airspace Operations Laboratory (AOL) during his tour of NASA Ames Research Center in California's Silicon Valley. The visit to the Airspace Operations Labs was part of a tour that featured various NASA facilities and laboratories which are central to NASA's research efforts involving human flight and space exploration.

During his tour of the Airspace Operations Laboratory, Mr. Cabana was given a hands-on demonstration and overview of the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Traffic Management (UTM) project. By hosting multiple UTM simulations and leading the human-system integration efforts with regard to UTM, the AOL played a vital role in developing requirements needed to safely and efficiently integrate low-altitude UAS operations into the National Airspace System (NAS).

The visit concluded with a presentation on the Scalable Traffic Management for Emergency Response Operations (STEReO) project. The STEReO project is an extension of UTM, bringing together multiple NASA technologies to improve emergency response operations during natural disasters. One of the major byproducts of NASA's STEReO work, the UASP-kit (Unmanned Aerial Systems Pilot kit), was also exhibited during the visit. The UASP-kit provides enhanced airspace awareness to drone operators during emergency response efforts by displaying detected aircraft nearby and providing alerts to potential airspace encroachments/conflicts
