Mission Statement Header
The Psychophysiology Research Laboratory is dedicated to the study of altered gravitational effects on human autonomic and central nervous system function. Most of our research focuses on the effect of gravity (and microgravity) on human physiology and performance. The overall goal of the research is to maximize the health, productivity and safety of humans in space.

In addition to our research, our laboratory is also concerned with education and with transfer of NASA technology to Earth-bound applications.

Psychophysiology Research Overview

The purpose of our research is to address the NASA requirement for ground-based and space flight studies examining the vestibular / autonomic interaction as related to adaptation to microgravity and readaptation to Earth.

Psychophysiology Research Technology

We perform our research is to determine if technology developed to facilitate astronaut adaptation to space will be valuable for providing patients suffering from Autonomic Neuropathy (e.g., Chronic intestinal Pseudo-obstruction Syndrome - CIPS) or vestibular pathology (e.g., Meniere's syndrome) with symptomatic relief from nausea and/or hypotension. The procedure, Autogenic-Feedback Training Exercise (AFTE), is a training method which involves teaching subjects to voluntarily control several of their own physiological responses to environmental stressors.
