Kinesthetic Cueing of Input-to-Display Rotation: Location of Cue Influences Performance  (2005)
Abstract Header
Bernard Adelstein, Stephen Ellis, and Robert Welch reported on a bimanual interaction technique that can provide information on spatial orientation of a work piece in a remote or virtual task space. Such information is critical when there is a misalignment between visual displays and the operators input controller because viewpoint automation is unavailable or fails. In particular, this poster showed that the location of the operator’s cueing hand affects the strength of the orientation cue.

Adelstein helped represent a second poster and hardware demonstration on March 19 and 20, 2005 titled "Design Considerations for Stand-alone Haptic Interfaces Communicating via UDP Protocol" by Ryan M. Traylor (Purdue University), Danny Wilhelm (Purdue), Bernard D. Adelstein, and Hong Z. Tan (Purdue). The poster's demonstration of high speed Ethernet communication employed a novel, mass-balanced, miniature joystick device that was invented by Adelstein at ARC.

The World Haptics Conference combined the Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environments and Teleoperation Systems Symposium (co-founded in 1992 by Adelstein) with the Sixth Eurohaptics Conference. Adelstein co-chaired a session at the conference and completed his 13th and final year as a member of the Haptic Symposium's program committee.
